The Hawaiian islands and other tropical and subtropical regions, such as India and Malaysia, are home to the palapalai fern.
ferns, in my opinion, have displayed some of nature's most beautiful spirals. One by one, each curl releases its most exquisite foliage as it uncoils. I have always been drawn to the coils of these lovely plants, even as a small child. I find something so captivating about them that whenever I see them, I like to take a moment to sit with them and take in all of their details.
an edition of 75 prints. Printed on handmade bamboo paper that I tore down to fit the block was used to print this fern carving. The paper is approximately 7 1/2 by 18 inches.
The print will be rolled up and shipped in a tube. Please be very careful when removing and flatting print, bamboo paper is very thin and fragile.
I hand-print each and every one of my prints; they are not reproductions. Printmaking techniques come in a wide variety. Relief printing, lithography, intaglio printing, and screen printing are examples of traditional printmaking methods. I currently like relief printing, specifically linocut printmaking. This is how I make all of my prints.
First, I draw the image I want to carve onto a block of linoleum. Areas of the block that will remain the same color as the surface being printed on are carved first. Then the ink is rolled onto the block's uncut surface. I then lay the paper on top of the block, first attaching the tabs that hold the paper in place, ensuring that the image is transferred with complete registration each time. When the paper is removed, the image appears reversed.
